Hey [Name], I’m really not that great with this kind of stuff, but a friend of mine told me I should…confess to you or something. Just meet me in the gym at 3:15. Don’t be late.
From your secret admirer.

~

You chuckled, crumpled up the note and threw it in the garbage next to your locker. What did this guy think you were, an idiot? You thought the “fake confession to the fat girl” prank lost any sort of popularity in middle school but apparently not.

“Hey, what did that note say?”

Your friend Bella looked curiously in the garbage can where you threw the small piece of paper.

You rolled your eyes, “Nothing important. I think it was for a different person anyway. Let’s get to class.”

You walked off as Bella stayed behind to think.

She quickly grabbed the note that was on top of a pile of other discarded papers and ran to follow you.

~

You cheerfully bounced into the classroom like you usually did.

“Good morning Matthew!” You chirped, with a pleasant smile on your face.

The person for whom you were addressing merely nodded and gave you a quick glance, soon after returning his eyes to his desk.

“Is that desk really that interesting Matthew?”

The grumpy male turned and saw his brother, giving him a knowing smirk.

“If you call me that one more time, I’m gonna punch you in the face.”

“Oh, so the pretty girl gets to call you by your full name but I don’t?” That grin on his face was truly infuriating. “How come your little girly crush gets all the special treatment and I-”

“Why don’t you just shut the hell up?” Matt shoved his brother against a desk while he whispered harshly.

“Mr. Williams! Please!” The teacher had took notice of the brothers little spat.
Matt and Al stood up the brush themselves off, returning to their seats. The teacher started her lecture.

You turned a bit to talk to Bella. The commotion on the other side of the classroom was a bit hard to ignore.

“Matt has a crush?”

She shrugged, “I guess…”

You turned back to face the front again, “Huh…I didn’t even know he was capable of that emotion…” saying it more to yourself then to Bella.

In all honesty, there was something that intrigued you about Matthew. I mean, he seemed pretty grumpy, but then there was that one time when he stood up to some idiots that were making fun of your weight in middle school. Not that you couldn’t deal with it yourself. You’ve learned not to care about what other people think. But his actions did radically change your opinion of Matthew. For one thing, you’ve noticed that you’re one of the only people who allows you to call him by his full name. You always say hello to him, even if he seems in one of his grouchy moods (which is almost always).

You’ve always wondered why he treated you differently. I mean, he did seem to have a pretty low tolerance for bullsh*t, but he didn’t seem the “hero-type”.

Through all of this contemplative thought, you were apparently staring at Matthew, because you noticed that he was looking back at you, giving you a strange look. A “why-is-this-chick-staring-at-me” kind of look.

You quickly trained your eyes to the front of the room and wished that your face wasn’t so many different shades of red.

~

After class, Bella wasted no time in coming up to you and bugging you about that note again.

“You fished it out of the garbage?!”

“[Name], you’re missing the point, I think you should go.”

“It’s a waste of my time. I mean it’s obviously a prank.”

“I think they would have made the whole thing more cheesy if it was a prank. Trust me, I think whoever sent this really wants to talk to you!”

You rolled your eyes, “Yeah, OK…”

“No I’m serious!” She walked in front of you with crossed arms, giving you a very stern look, “You’re going to meet with this boy. And if it IS a prank, I’ll have my brother beat him up. Deal?”

“Ugh…fine. But I’m only doing this so you get off my back about it.”

~

You took your eyes off your book and looked at your watch.

3:20 PM

“’Don’t be late’ my ass…” you scoffed, putting your book away in your bag. At least the whole thing was uneventful. You’d rather have that then some moron calling you a “whale” or whatever other uncreative insults they could connect to your size.

You were about to leave when you heard a commotion going on from the other side of the gym.

“Matthew, please! You’ve been pining over her for long enough, just go through with it!”
“My name is MATT you dipsh*t and this was a horrible idea. That note was stupid and this isn’t a f*cking chick-flick.”

You hid behind the bleachers and saw Matthew being dragged into the gym by his older brother Artie. It was quite the sight really. You didn’t think Artie had the strength.
They stopped when they got near the bleachers.

“See, she’s not even here let’s go.” Matthew was quick to turn around, but Artie stopped him, seeing you behind the bleachers.

“Wait, she’s right here. Poppet, what are you doing back there?” He asked with a look of slight concern.

“U-uh...reading? My friend told me I should come and I can go if you don’t want to-“

“Nonononono!!! We’re very glad you came, isn’t that right Matthew?”

“Hm…” he grunted, looking quite indifferent about the whole thing.

“Oh come now Matthew, did you want to say something to Miss [Name]?”

You tightened your grip on the handle of your backpack as you watched Matthew.
“Well…?” Artie nudged his brother.

Matthew let out a long sigh, “Um…I…like you…OK?”

You dropped your jaw and you almost dropped your backpack. You stared at Matthew and Matthew was staring at the bleachers next to you.

You turned your eyes to the ground, “Really?...”

Artie butted in, “Are you kidding? He’s always worried about what you think of him and if other boys like you and Alfred is constantly teasing him about it and-“

“Artie…” Matthew interrupted.

“Oh, sorry…” Artie blushed a bit and let the gym, closing the door.

You managed to look back at him, “Matthew…are you serious?”

Matthew finally managed to look at you back at you, “I don’t let just anyone call me ‘Matthew’ you know.”

You smiled a bit, “I guess I noticed that…”

“And it does really piss me off when people make fun of you. Because you’re actually kind of hot…and stuff.”

You chuckled a bit, “I’ve never been called that before.”

“Well…?” Matthew was staring at you from behind his ever-present sunglasses.

“Well what?”

“What do you say? Do you want to…I dunno…go out or something?”

You readjusted your bag strap on your shoulder, “…yeah. I would. A lot.”

Matthew finally cracked a smirk, “Cool.” He started walking out of the gym, swinging his arm around your shoulder as you both left.

I was only when you mustered up the courage to lay your head on his shoulder that you heard how fast his heart was beating.

Because I'm falling more and more in love with this character because he is a sweetie. Also, chubby!reader because I'm sick of seeing the frail and self-conscious stereotype. Big people can be kind of confident too guys! We just have some troubles to overcome!
